Crum Hill 10-21-2006![]()
I've wanted to climb these bad boys for 10 years now. Crum Hill stands at 2841' and Spruce Hill stands at 2730'. Crum hill is the supposed future site of a bunch of wind turbines (formerly dubbed as the Hoosac Wind project). However Environmentalists are currently fighting the project (you heard that right). I could go either way. Anyways the trailhead is right at the Tilda hill road height of land. The trail is open to the public but is privately owned (see sign below!). Crum Hill is double peaked. The north peak (the site of the north measuring tower) has a cairn at the summit, not to mention the only view of the day. It is slightly lower than the south peak which is nearly unidentifiable requires bushwhacking. There is an AMC register attached to the south side of a tree there (south Crum). There is no view to speak of here. I bushwhacked from Crum to Spruce through the state forest and found at the saddle between the peaks a cellarhole as well as numerous rock piles strewn around the land. Spruce hill was had a more identifiable summit than south Crum but not a lot of views. I encountered some elderly hikers passing through on the trail. No USGS benchmark was found on any peak. I bushwhacked back to Crum and followed the trail to my car. Total vertical was 1375 feet time is unknown. This hike does not have much to offer view-wise, but if you like western mass mountains than this is a must see. Click Here for the Hike Map
