Mount Greylock 8-5-06![]()
Ah, Thunderbolt trail. This trail is in my opinion the hardest trail in Massachusetts to climb. The trail rises about 2250' in a little over 2 miles making it one of the steepest trails I've climbed to begin with (definitely top 3). This trail however, is unlike any other trail I know. First of all its a ski racing trail which explains the steepness. Second of all the footing along the trail absolutely suck. Instead of rock you are basically climbing on top soil, and where there is rock its very loose and in the process of eroding away (with my help of course). I hiked this trail back in march and before that in the summer of 2002. I struggled both times, and this third time I still struggled. I was hell bent on climbing the trail as fast as I could and I achieved that but not without difficulty. I was very fatigued when I reached the summit. I planned to jog a bit on the top ridgeline but I was so burned out from the main ascent that there was no way in hell that was going to happen. I reached the summit at the glorious time of 55:12. The 80 degree temperature that day did not make things any easier on me. Nor did the relentless sun. But I did make it and now can at least enjoy a bit of self indulgence over the fact that I managed to climb a trail which I find frightfully annoying and difficult in such a great time, and not just a great personal time but a great time in general.
