Holyoke Range Traverse 1-7-07..AKA the "five of seven sisters" Seven sisters traverse..AAKA the "East of Connecticut River" Seven sisters traverse
![]()
They may not be tall, but when added together its a good solid hike.. The Holyoke range is an interesting one.. about 12 miles long on the east side of the Connecticut river the tallest peak stands at a mere 1106 feet tall. But its relative prominence to the low lying valley makes the whole range look somewhat huge. The range is made pretty much entirely of Basalt (Volcanic rock -- used in asphalt) and Arkose. These mountains once stood much taller but the glaciers smoothed them out and cut them down considerably over 10000 years ago. The hike isn't grueling, but it is respectable. The total vertical gain is over 3000 feet. The trail consists of an endless wave of small ups and downs. There are only a few areas where its seriously steep and rocky, but they are not sustained for long so there is nothing to really wear you down. I thought of this as a white mountain traverse scaled down to 1/3 the size which is a pretty darned good analogy I think! I did this hike with DaveG of VFTT, who has section hiked the traverse but never gone all the way over. We spotted cars one on Harris Rd, one at the western trailhead. When we started there was nary a soul to be seen but when we were done there were lots of hikers out and about. All the parking lots were overflowing! Plenty of people were enjoying the unseasonably warm el niņo weather (45 degrees!!!). Click Here for the Hike Map
