Trail(s) Taken AT

Ah my second NE100 in Maine for the week. This completes my Mahoosuc Range quest! This was a cold one, it was 12 degrees at the base and who knows at the top (probably 0-5) The trail was well traveled at first but gradually diminished as people apparently turned back. The steep Icy section before W baldpate seemed to have scared off all but the most determined hikers (not many apparently). Once I passed W Baldpate summit the last tracks ended and I was all on my own! Despite the cold the hike was comfortable until I reached the col between the two baldpates. The open rocks made for a windy cold hell hole.

To make matters more interesting the rocks were completely covered in ice. I brought stabilicers but what fun would using those have been? I bare booted the entire giant rock face. Don't feel too impressed, the variety of ice was very cold and not smooth.. therefore not slippery.. there were a few ice traps here and there so it wasn't exactly easy either. Spruce traps also lurked in some parts of the col, the deepest were about 3 feet deep. I eventually reached the summit of East Baldpate and rejoiced by taking pictures of the crystal clear amazing views as well as the setting sun.

The return trip was a freezing mess as I was now walking into the wind. It wasn't blowing very hard but it was still very chilling. I slid down most of the rock face on my hands and feet which was a blast! Besides a few more sunset shots from W Baldpate the remainder of thereturn trip was pretty uneventful. Great Hike!!!
