Old Speck 11-4-06![]()
Ah, my first Maine 4000 footer, also the first time I've ever spent more than 20 minutes in Maine. Old Speck is located just over the border from New Hampshire in the Berlin vicinity, and a couple miles north of Sunday River. This mountain although not in the WMNF is part of the White mountains. I started this hike slightly before 1:00pm on the AT. Snow and ice was encountered almost immediately. This trail was steep right from the start and doesn't taper off for about 1000 feet. I encountered several people descending as I climbed, mostly French Canadian. Things did not get real cold until near the top where I was greeted by a very old looking lookout tower and some very nice clear north/east/south views. I had no idea what I was looking at as I am not familiar with Maine. I climbed the ladder up the tower and snapped some pictures then scurried back down to avoid the cold wind. I used stabilicers on my descent to speed things up. I arrived back at my car at 4:57, just before twilight ended thus avoiding a flashlight. Click Here for the Hike Map
