Cabot 10-28-06![]()
This was a very tiring trip. First of all I estimated this trip at under 9 miles. It was really 9.6! The trail (Bunnel notch) was not steep at all but it is 4.8 miles one way (to summit). I encountered one pair of hikers about midway. The Snow line was around 2300' This trail follows a semi recent logging road for the first mile or so before it branches off to follow the brook up the notch. The snow was not too bad until I reached the "oh my god they killed Kenny!" (kilkenny) trail. Then things started getting increasingly thick and heavy. Above 3400' the ever greens were shedding snow like mad and a 20 lb wad of snow and ice pegged me right in the head. The snow was very deep 5-6" very wet and VERY heavy. Some places i would break through to the ground and hit water. My feet were completely drenched and were very cold. The last 600' went very slow and were not terribly fun. My poor toes were freezing and I was exhausted from slogging through the wet heavy snow. I Reached the Summit and immediately scurried back to the shelter I saw a little south of the summit along the trail. I wrung out my socked real quick, ate, drank and then started down the trail in great haste. Keep in mind I started at 2:00pm. I reached the summit at 5:00. the sun sets at about 5:45 at this time of year (I came expecting to return in the dark so I brought a flashlight). I raced down the trail wearing my stabilicers to warmer less toe numbing temperatures (around 3300). Flashlight requiring darkness came at exactly 6:15. I reached my car at 6:55. Nothing much exciting happened on the descent except the one stream crossing I had to deal with had risen about 3 inches making the crossing seem impossible. I however used my stabilicers to hop across the rocks and made a dry safe crossing. Then I turned around and yelled at the river "you thought you'd get me this time didn't you!!!!". Actually I saw a bright flash in the sky when I was about 10 mins from my car. It was not lightning and the large explosion's sound did not reach me for about 10 seconds I wonder if it was artillery? I am not sure if the is a testing range nearby. The explosion happened near Berlin NH. It was bright round and yellow. Total miles 9.6 total vertical was 2800'. Max snow depth was about 9 inches.
