Kinsmen, Cannon Traverse 10-7-06![]()
One of the shorter traverses. This lasted only 7:20. I woke up at 3:45 in Plymouth NH and drove up to lafayette campground. I began the hike at 4:28. The moon was full so my flashlight was not necessary for vast swaths of the hike. I Got a nice moonlit view of Lonesome Lake and passed the hut on fishing Jimmy trail. I climbed the notorously boring trail up to kinsman ridge trail when the sun began to rise behind the East Franconias. I frantically took some pictures and scurried up to the summit of North kinsman in time to get the sunrise. On my way to South Kinsman I caught some very striking glimpses of the mountain ranges in Vermont. More views presented themselves at the flat and long South Kinsman summit. I traveled back to North Kinsman on my way over to Cannon (took 58 mins RT from N to S to N kinsman 1.8 mi) Soaked up some more better lit views then proceeded back to the ridge trail intersection where I proceeded north over the infamous cannon balls. There are basically 3 nice round mountains (technically 4) south of cannon that actually do sort of look like cannon balls. This made for lots of annoying ups and downs. I snagged my thumbs up on the Northern most cannon ball (which is a NE 100 peak). Between the North ball and cannon was a very mean ravine with a very sharp climb up Cannon. As it was now slightly alter in the day I began encountering more hikers. As I reached the Hi-cannon trail intersection I started encountering the dreaded Tram tourists (people who took the Aerial tramway to the top (cheaters!)). I hit the top which was loaded with tourists. I did encounter a man who did the NH 47. That right, 47 (or was it 46?) He did it in the 60s when they only counted 46 or 47 peaks (one of the ones since added was Galehead, West bond may have been the other). I took a bunch of pictures and bid my single serving friend goodbye as I started my descent. I took kinsman ridge to Hi-cannon. I encountered quite a few hikers making their way up Hi-cannon tr. The trail was very hard to see at points due to the fallen leaves (trees were WAY past peak in the higher parts of the notch). I ventured down the fabled ladder and got to my car before noon!
