Moriah-Carters-Wildcats 9-30-06![]()
The long awaited moriah-carter(s)-Wildcat(s) traverse. Started at 4:11 am in Gorham. Proceeded up Carter-Moriah trail which was very moderate at first but opened up into ledge around 2200' (base el was 750'! wow!). Hit the summit just in time for sunrise. I was excited to see the ice and frost (there wasn't much). I proceeded carefully (boardwalks were icy) past the Imp camp (where I heard people) to the carters.
The ascent up N Carter was steep, rocky and icy! Lots of fun! The carters were much icier and much colder than Moriah (they are all 400-600' taller than Moriah too). After the Carters I descended the dreaded Zeta Pass which put me down to 3700'. Then I climbed up a very consistently graded friendly trail to Carter Dome 4800' Not a lot of ice here, I skipped Mt Hight because I didn't know if I had enough time (and its not an official 4000 footer (turns out I had tons of time)). Carter dome lacked a sign but the views of the Presis were good. I ate a bit of food on the summit and then descended the MOST UNWELCOMED but beautiful Carter Notch, a 1600' drop. I met a few people on the way down and talked briefly about my adventure "You started from Gorham!?!?!?" I hit the bottom of the notch just in time for lunch. I didn't even bother going to the hut, I just ate on a rock for 5 mins. I began an easier than expected 1200' ascent up Wild Cat A. The views were nice up there (on the vista that is..) but limited to the north, meaning limited to the notch. I proceeded southward across the unmarked summits B and C. I got some nice views of Washington from the trail down C. Once I got to D I noticed a large number of people lurking around. They had taken the ski lift/mini gondolas up (I was wondering how a woman in heels got up there). I went over WC E and began the descent to my bike. I took lots of Washington shots and foliage shots along the way. I could not wait to get to my bike. My bike meant I was one step closer to my car which was one step closer to dinner which was one step closer to sleep. I got to my bike before 3:30 which was way ahead of schedule. I biked the 12.5 miles to Gorham with fanatical speed (19.3 mph average according to my GPS) took a little over 40 minutes (not bad, its a 17 minute car drive.. might have helped that it was all DOWNHILL). I got to my car around 4:10 -- approx 12 hours after leaving it. Click Here for the Hike Map
