Whiteface - East Sleeper 1-20-07
#73 of my NE100 Quest. Now only 4 remain in New Hampshire! I started this one way later than normal (9:30!) I met lots of people on my way up including one group of nine that was kind enough to let me pass! I hiked up most of the way with 2 other hikers who started at the same time as I did. I opted to hit the true Whiteface summit (viewless) which added like .4 miles to the trip I think. The Trails were all well broken in except for Downes bk/Kate Sleeper trail which had one pair of prints the whole way (they didn't lead to the summit, but continued to Tripyramids) As the day progressed it got BITTERLY cold. -5 degrees F at the open area on the false summit on my way down. Look at the frost in my hair on my thumbs up from East Sleepers! Yikes! My hands would instantly numb when I took off my gloves that's how cold it was! When I got to my car it was 9 degrees at the base. Overall a great hike if you are prepared for the bitter cold which you -should be- at this time of year.
