Trail(s) Taken Rocky Branch tr , Isolation tr , Davis tr

So this is it, the last of the NH48. 14.6 miles round trip. I started at 7:15am on Rocky branch trail at Rte 16. The initial grades were moderate, this was as steep as the the hike ever got (except the final 100 feet). After ascending to around 2700' the trail merged onto an old well developed abandoned logging road. The trail stayed pretty flat here with very slight grades that ultimately brought me up to about 3200'. The trail became watercourse from here on to the Rock Branch river. I reached the crossing and quickly decided not to cross but to bushwhack 1/4 mile to the 2nd crossing. The bushwhack (to Isolation tr) was a bit of a pain but it sure beat crossing twice. The trail here followed an old logging rail grade. Another crossing appeared after a while which promptly crossed back after 200 feet (I bushwhacked on the return trip). One more crossing onto the west side of the river occured, after this Isolation trail became very miserable!

The miserable overgrown wet trail brought me to a campsite with a maze of trails. I became utterly confused here and attempted a bushwhack to Davis trail. this was a miserable failure not to mention a bad idea. I encountered snow off the trail as deep as 4 feet deep. I know this because fell through! FOUR FEET!!!!!!! After giving up and returning to the camp I found the proper trail which brought me to the prize I sought! The summit! It was a bit cold up top but the view was clear. Spectacular views of the south presidentials with white caps dominated the north. I drank my Victory Zeb's Sarsaparilla which I purchased in N Conway the day before and began my descent! I reached the summit at 11:30 and finished the hike at just before 3:00. It took 45 minutes less to descend than ascend. What a long long hike!

After the hike I ate dinner and had some drinks with some friends down at Delaney's Hole in the wall in N. Conway. Good times! I did all 48 except Moosilauke within 2 1/4 months.

Total time was 7:45, total vertical was 3300' RT, Total length was 14.6 mi.
