Nancy Mountain 2-10-07![]()
Donna, Kyle and I (all of VFTT) hit the trail a little after 9:00, starting on 302 on the Nancy Pond trail. The Trail was nice and wide and easy for a way as it was clearly an old logging road. We reached the ruins of some old building which obviously once was home of some sort of furnace and the trail became considerably more rugged. We reached a large frozen solid water cascade and took the opportunity for a small photo op of me pretending to climb it. After teh cascade the trail followed a series of steep switchbacks which led us into another more picturesque flat area and ultimately to the frozen over ponds (first Nancy then Norcross) We skirted around the ponds and stayed on the trail on the way up cause we weren't sure of their direction, and we were basically breaking the trail at that point. After going around and over some very big drifts next to Norcross pond, we came across the No camping sign so often mentioned in Nancy trip reports. We soaked in some views from the natural dam looking towards Zealand before we commenced our trip up the herd path. The Nancy Herd path, located right before the no camping sign is a cakewalk to follow. Even though we were breaking the trail, it was still very easy to follow. It went up at a moderate grade until the slide, then followed the slide up for about 100 vertical, then went up another 100 of so feet at a mellow grade before becoming insanely steep. The trail followed the very steep course until about 50 feet below the summit where it evened off. We took a break at the summit to have a snack and enjoy they obscured, but still enjoyable views (could see Kearsarge North, Stairs, Resolution, Cranmore/Attitash pretty well) The Presi's were obscured by clouds unfortunately. On the steep descent we had some great views of Carrigan, Anderson, and Vose Spur. We opted to cross the ponds on the way out which definately saved us time. Kyle wondered if the ponds were frozen solid (wouldn't surprise me). The wind stayed calm along most of the trip except at the ponds (which was nice, as it was 11 degrees at the summit). On the descent we noticed a tree shaped as an arch over the trail (a little bit above the cascade). We arrived at our cars shortly before 4:30! long day, and a great hike! Always a blast having people along to participate on trail chat :) Click Here for the Hike Map
