North & South Pack Monadnock 1-27-07![]()
I wanted to give my poor car a rest, so I decided to put up a trip notice on VFTT. There was interest from several folk, but in the end it turned out to be Abster and I. It was in the single digits when we left the parking lot shortly after 9:00, snow was falling fairly lightly (killing all views for the time being). We followed the rock and root infested Wapack trail up to the "Viewless due to snowfall" South peak. I took a few pictures and we proceeded northward to the north peak. Along the way certain trail ambiguities became apparent at an outcrop with several signs, none of which indicated the path of the Wapack trail. Ultimately the right decision was made and we proceeded through the col between the two peaks. As we approached the North peak conditions cleared up noticeably and the S/W views from North Pack began to emerge. We spent a short time at the cold and wind swept summit to soak up the views of Mt Monadnock before heading back to the south peak. We encountered another pair of hikers in the col about 30 minutes away from the north peak. Views on the South peak opened up considerably once we arrived at the fire tower. views of approximately 40 miles were enjoyed before we descended to our cars via the auto road. I tested out my snow shoes on the road (even though they were unnecessary). Great hike, nice to see the snow & have company! Click Here for the Hike Map
