Whiteface & Passaconaway 10-28-06![]()
This Hike had several phases (weatherwise). First there was cold rainy, then mixed snow and rain, then heavy snow, then winter wonderland powder snow, then ice, then slush, then rain again. In that order!!!!! Started around 4:40 and finished like 11:40. I have no idea what time I reached Whiteface but I did get to Passaconaway at about 9:35. This hike was pretty slow I think, mainly due to the constant precipitation, the snow, and worst of all the slush. I made a wrong turn off blueberry ledge trail early on onto McCrillis Trail but corrected myself quickly (thankfully). The rain turned to snowy/rain mix at 1950' and pure snow at 2500'. There were some really tricky ledges to climb before Whiteface Summit, so I put on my stabilicers which made life MUCH easier. I kept them on for several hours. Whiteface does not have a marked summit so I made my best guess as to what the summit was (using altimeter/maps). Lots of powdery fun snow up here as deep as 6 inches. I followed Rollins trail through the saddled between Whiteface and Passaconaway. As I lost altitude the snow got stickier and my shoes got soaked. I followed the eastern trail up the passaconaway loop (meant to follow dicey mill but didn't). This was steep and bothersome. The summit did not have a marker but it was pretty clear (end of spur trail). I made a snow man with angry eyebrows. I began my descent which got increasingly slushy as I descended. Between 3000' and 2000' on Dicey Mill the trail was a SLUSHY HELL HOLE. I got very soaked and very angry! Below 2000 there was no snow. I did not encounter any other hikers all day but there was a car in the parking lot when I returned. I reached my car with great happiness and drove to my next trip! Total Vertical was approx 3800'. 11.9 Miles. Max snow depth 6-7 Inches. Click Here for the Hike Map
