Tripyramids 11-04-06![]()
This hike was necessary because I biked in on Livermore road the first time so it does not OFFICIALLY count towards my NH48. This time I approached the TP massif from the Kanc. I planned to hike up pine bend trail, but opted not to because there was no parking lot at the trailhead (didn't want to park along the highway at 4:40AM). So I opted for the slightly longer Plan B: Sabbaday Brook Trail, its a little longer but who cares right? Wrong! This trail was a huge nightmare. I read about it a few days before and knew there were tons of brook crossings. These crossings proved to be a complete nightmare. First Crossing or so I thought. It was a crossing where the trail crossed back after a few hundred or so feet. I thought I came across it when I saw what looked like a herd path. I think this was actually the trail now (I couldn't tell) it was dark and my flashlight is tiny. So I kept going until I came across a nightmare crossing. I made it across dry but it required some serious courage gathering to jump from icy rock to icy rock in the dark in high water. I followed the trail and after a few hundred feet there was another crossing D'oh! This part could NOT be crossed so I back tracked and crossed the first crossing again (this did not make me happy). I bushwhacked until I found the trail again. I followed for a while to another impossible crossing. So I bushwhacked until I found a suitable crossing which took AN ENTIRE HOUR. I crossed and Bushwhacked to the dreaded trail, now well over an hour behind schedule (BTW I found a 15 foot long spruce log that I tried to turn into a bridge but it snapped in half when I dropped the 400 lb nightmare into the river). I remerged with the river at the wilderness boundary. The rest of the trip was uneventful until the steep final ascent except for the fact that I found some old pieces of metal (the trail is on an old logging road). The final ascent was through virgin snow and was steep and icy. Good thing I had stabilicers! I finally reached Tripyramid loop and headed to Middle TP, then turned around to North TP (who cares about S TP! No view and not an official 4000!) I rejoiced on North TP where I opted to take pine bend down to the Kanc (trailhead is like a mile from Sabbaday). I got some nice views of the North Slide and encountered some other hikers on my way down. Best part was NO NIGHTMARE RIVER CROSSINGS. I reached the Kanc at 10:44 and half walked half jogged to my car (alternated, you try jogging in my boots on pavement, it sucks). Got to my car at 10:57! Click Here for the Hike Map
