Uncanoonuc 10-25-06![]()
If you have ever been to Manchester NH you have probably seen this mountain to the west. It it very easy to spot because its acts as a giant radio radiator! There are more than 10 towers on the south summit. In its heyday Uncanoonuc was a major tourist destination. There was a hotel as well as ski slopes on the mountain. Most notably of all there was a Cog Railroad (build on a grade, not a trestle like Washington). The cog railroad brought tourists up to the hotel and also acted in place of chairlifts for skiers in the winter. I hiked up the Historic rail grade. It was actually quite steep and a bit on the grueling side. The grade is pretty much intact and some artifacts are still lurking around. The base of the hill was 660 feet. Summit was 1320. A total gain of 660 was experienced in about a 17 minute ascent. Views were limited to a vista not near the summit. You got a nice gander at Manchester and The Pawtuckaway mountains to the NE.
