Trail(s) Taken Starr King tr

#47 of 48. This was a very cool hike. I followed the Starr King trail up to Starr King summit then to Waumbek. It was 3.6 Miles to Waumbek and 2.6 to S.K. 5 minutes after I started the hike it began to snow. Accumulation appeared around 2200' and Accumulation from the previous day appeared at 3000' Snow from the previousday was icy and hard. This is because it was rained on, I suspect it was a wet heavy snow hellhole yesterday just like Cabot was. As it was it was much nicer then the slush! The grades were really consistent and easy throughout the hike. Snow depths got really deep over 3600' and blow downs became common above 3700'. There were 2 blow downs before S.K. Summit and about 10 between S.K. and Waumbek, some a few weeks old, some a day old. Snow depth was about 5-8" in the Inter S.K/Waumbek area but in some palces it was 15" deep! Not bad for October!! Starr King had a neat chimney on the top, but clouds obscured any view. There was one very bad misleading blow down 10 minutes north of S.K. so anyone hiking this soon should watch for that. There was also a section of blowdowns that completely cleared a section of land opening up the only view I got during the whole hike. Waumbek Summit had a nice cairn but not much else. There was plenty of wind and snow chilling my ears!

On my descent I encountered another hiker around 800 feet below S.K. Summit. The guy had 2 dogs and was on his 45th October NH 48 peak (he was doing what they call a "twelve by forth eight" or hiking all 48 peaks in every month of the year). Funny story, I stopped by The Mountain Wanderer Bookstore In Lincoln on my way home to pick up some goodies and some people were talking about some guy who went to hike the Osceolas but had to turn back that day. I overheard their description of the guy with his dogs and asked them about him. Turns out he was the same guy I met (they knew him well). Talk about a bit of Irony!

Total Vertical was 3000'. Length was 7.2 Round trip. Took 2 hours to get to Waumbek. Whole trip took 3:30. Great trip! Wish it had views but the weather was not cooperative! Amazing seeing that much snow in October.
