Hunter Mountain 11-18-06![]()
My first peak in the Catskills. I chose to climb the shortest and therefore steepest trail (Becker Hollow) which does a beefy 2220 feet in 2.08 miles (summit is at about 4040). I left my parents house in WMASS at 3:45AM and got to the trailhead at the crack of dawn. The trail started flat with lots of old ruins of old infrastructure (including a dam and lots of pipes). It gradually build up steepness over time, the sharpest incline was from about 3400-3750 which was a bit of a challenge because of the abundance of ice and loose rock. I am tempted to make comparisons of this mountain and others. Its fairly persistent steepness reminded me of Burr Burton Trail up Equinox, and the surrounding area and summit reminded me of Stratton VIA AT/LT. The light snow reminded me of Hale! Hunter did bring some new features to the table however, the trail was very wide and the summit was very flat. Fog was persistent from 3500'+ so there was no view. There is a fire tower at the summit, which is apparently the highest elevated fire tower in the North East. The fire tower however was locked so after climbing to the top I was very disappointed that I could not seek shelter from the cold wind! There is a good chance I will give this peak another shot on a more clear day. Click Here for the Hike Map
