Slide Mountain 11-18-06![]()
The second Catskill hike for me. Slide is the tallest of the Catskills standing at 4180' It was my second and final Catskill 4000 footer (yes there are -only- two). Unlike Hunter which I did a few hours before, Slide did not have any snow. Sadly the fogline was at about 3900' making any views at the summit impossible. The trail I took (from county rd 47) was much easier than Hunter, in fact it was a very easy trail in general! 1800 feet over 2.7 miles. The geology here is profoundly interesting. Lots of arkose (reddish purple sandstone) near the base, and conglomerate stone with quartz (the conglomerate stone looked like concrete!). I found tons rosy quartz-agate like stone near the summit.
