Pump Station Road, Mid State Tr, Indian Stairs. |
My first Pennsylvania hike! Located in the State College vicinity! Pennsylvania
has lots of Anticline ridgelines which run in the 2000 foot range (they appear
as long bands of mountains about 3 miles wide at the base), and this was one of
them! I did this with a few friends from college. Started the hike from Henry
Valley road and followed the old Pump House Road up to the ridgeline top, then
proceeded east along the Midstate trail to the old fire tower ruins at the
summit (2238'). Along the ascent there were tons of unusual rocks scattered all
along the hillside, kind of resembling the Tripyramid slides except made of
limestone. Then we proceeded further eastward to the Indian Stairs trail back
down to Henry Valley Rd and back to the car.
You might be wondering what the Indian stairs are. Officially nobody truly knows
who built them, but it's believed that Indians built the stairs up one side and
down the other side. The stairs are in pretty good shape but kind of treacherous
at points because of the presence of snow.
