Abraham VT 4-7-07![]()
I wanted to take it easy this time and start at Lincoln Gap instead of the Battell trailhead. The goal in mind was to save myself about 1.5 miles and about 1100 vertical gain. Sadly it didn't happen that way. The road was not plowed through the gap, so I had to park at the last house. This added about 1/4 mile to the trip and saved approximately 500 vertical feet of gain. The most significant drawback was this introduced about 2.25 miles of unbroken trail to the trip. I started the trip around 11:15 AM and began the slow walk up to the gap. The trip up to the gap was uneventful and felt longer than it was. Once I got on to the long trail I looked at the trail register. Nobody had signed in since March 31st. The march up the trail was indeed slow. There was anywhere between 4-10 inches of powdery snow on the ground which kept the pace a bit low, but was not too stressful. The trail seemed to have a good hard base on it. There was only one large rock obstacle to go around along the way. When I reached the Battell trail junction I was pleased to find the trail was broken out! I took a short break at the shelter to take a drink of water before making a break for the final ascent. The final ascent was nowhere near as steep or as long as I had remembered it. It didn't take long to reach the summit. Views were limited. Clouds swirled around limiting views to maybe 10 miles at most. It was a very bleak gray day, nothing like my trip here in August! I observed the time and the weather. I looked north at Mt Ellen. My plan was to bag both Ellen and Abraham, but the timing and weather did not mesh with my post-hiking plans. I bid Abraham adieu after about 10 minutes on top (it wasn't windy, but it was cold). The descent was a quick one. I was able to slide on my snowshoes through most of the powder and butt slide on the steeper spots. It took me half as long to go down as to go up (3 hours up 1.5 down). Naturally, as I was driving away I looked back at the mountain to see things had cleared up considerably! Just my luck! Click Here for the Hike Map
