Ascutney 7-15-06![]()
This 3150' Monadnock (Vermont's ONLY BTW) is located right on the border of NH along the CT river. Its that big mountain next to I-91 about 40 miles north of the MA border. This mountain is very interesting for many reasons. I encountered some very interesting soft sedimentary rocks, as well as some odd reddish hard stones. Both existed in abundance on the mountain. There was lots of hardwood trees with no low branches which made for a unique experience up being able to see far in the woods. There were 2 major waterfalls along the path, both relatively near the trail head. The second one is much bigger and more amazing (the trail goes to the top and only the top). The trail is fairly steep but not nightmarish. It was about the same length as Sunapee (3 miles). There was a glider jump point near the trail below the summit. The summit had a nice outcrop as well as a communication tower. There was a lookout tower not quite at the summit, but the top of the tower was high enough to see over the true summit (top was around 3210). The humidity was very thick like with Sunapee. In fact it was thicker than Sunapee. On Sunapee's summit I could see Ascutney, but when I got up Ascutney I could not see Sunapee. It rain a bit on top but it was a warm rain. I could barely see the outline of Okemo with the thick haze. Click Here for the Hike Map
