Camel's Hump 7-29-06![]()
A bit tired and frustrated by the persistent fog I drove up Rte 100 60 miles to Camel's Hump. This 4000 footer (4080) has a distinctive look (the camel's hump) and was a challenging climb. As I approached the mountain it was clear, however as soon as I turned off my car it started to pour. I was not pleased by this one bit, but the downpour only lasted 3 minutes and quickly cleared up. I started up the Monroe trail which was not very steep at all. However instead of following that trail to the AT/LT I opted to take the steeper longer and more scenic Dean trail. Dean trail brought me up a modest grade to the "wind gap" a gap between camel's hump and dean mountain. This moderate ascent gave me some very nice views (however no wind!). As soon as I hit the AT/LT that is when things became hellish. The trail started an immediate steep slippery rocky ascent. As I got onto some nice exposed rocks I encountered a mass exodus of hikers fleeing the coming thunderstorm. Many warning me of impending doom. I listened and looked at the situation and determined that the storms were too far south to affect me. I continued my climb which actually went downhill a bit all the while the camel's hump stood in front of me taking up ever more of my field of vision. At this point fatigue set in, everything was fine except my legs were beginning to get weak. That was unfortunate because the steepest cliff climbing was ahead of me. Ultimately I made it up the very steep and hellish rocks to the summit. I watched the T storm which was safely 20 miles south of me. I stuck around on the top for all of 20 minutes before heading north to the Monroe trail connector. I followed Monroe all the way to my car. This trail was much less steep and far easier than the AT/LT and would be a good moderate-hard trail. about 1 mile from my car I got caught in a biblical proportion downpour which lasted about 10 minutes. Total ascent was about 2700 (that made 7000 for the day). Click Here for the Hike Map
