Trail(s) Taken Monroe Tr, LT

My second Hike of the day, I arrived at the end of the road to the trailhead to find that the last .4 miles of the road were unplowed. To make matters worse there were lots of no parking signs all over. To make matters even worse than that there was a winter parking spot not plowed out! My plan of action became to park in the winter lot meaning I had to drive my poor car through 6 inch deep snow .1 miles. Amazingly I made it no worse for the wear!

The trail was reasonably well packed, I barebooted about .5 miles before I switched to snowshoes. The snow was a semi packed mashed potato variety. About 1 mile from the summit the snow pack ended completely. Apparently this was where people decided to turn back! So from here on I had to break trail in 3-6 inch masked potato crap! As if that wasn't bad enough I pulled my groin so it hurt to lift my leg the necessary couple inches higher to break trail. This section was very slow. It took me 2 hours to go the last mile.

When I reached the LT the trail was nicely broken out (from another trail which apparently is shorter). I reached the summit to breath taking views in every direction. The sun shined hard and the rocks were very warm. I took a swarm of pictures before lying down on the rocks to rest. I gave myself a time budget of 30 mins at the top to enjoy the great weather. After soaking in the sun for 15 mins another hiker showed up, and then another, and another. soon there were 5 people up top. I chatted for a while before I began my descent. None of the other hikers had snowshoes.

On my descent I encountered approximately 40 other hikers, mostly taking the Monroe trail and mostly College students. Only 2 had snowshoes but that's okay, the sheer volume packed the trail down amazingly well allowing me to make a nice 1:25 descent. When I got back to the parking lot there were about 15 cars all parked illegally on the road! I was the only sucker who drove on the unplowed winter lot rd!
