Trail(s) Taken AL/LT

AKA: The Glastenbury Death March

6-4-2006

I would be lying if I said I had fun on this trip. it was 20+ miles, and with all the ups and downs the whole thing netted 4600 vertical. But that's not why I am bitter. At least, not directly why. I am mostly unhappy because I was promised sunshine, and instead all I got was cloudiness! as I climbed everything over 3200ft was clouds. The terrain was very easy however long. The scenery was profoundly boring, 3 hours? I could have tolerated, 5 hours? Probably, but not 9! I started at 10:50am and finished around 7:30pm. I took no breaks except 2 minutes at the tower. Everything else was constant walking. I could have seen the same level of nature and solitude 1/4 mile up my road in Plainfield.

The hike was not a complete waste, I did get to hike more vertical than ever before, as well as more distance (slightly beating the 20 mile Boston walk). I did get to see SOME views at some lower vistas. I also encountered some interesting thru hikers. I also got to experience something that you don't get to experience everyday: Knowing you are 7-10 miles from the nearest house, and knowing that there is nobody to hear you scream if Bigfoot carries you off.

I would consider going again but only under three very serious conditions: 1) Someone came with me (it is VERY VERY VERY VERY BORING) 2) If its a nice day where I could actually see something. 3) we start off at 6 or 7 AM not nearly 11!

As an interesting aside, I've wanted to hike the mountain for nearly 5 years now, ironic that the mountain I've wanted to hike so badly for so long turned out to be such a crummy experience.
