Jay Peak, Big Jay 11-26-06![]()
Jay peak has the best views in Vermont, there I said it. I was utterly blown away by the sheer awesomeness of the vast expanse of mountains that was opened up to me as I reached the summit. Even though it was somewhat hazy you could still see a long way, I would love to see it when it was clear (there were cloud over Champlain blocking any views of the Adirondacks) You even had some real nice views that penetrated pretty deep into Quebec (Jay is like 10 miles from the border if that). The hike was not very hard (only 1700 and 1.6 miles for a view like that?!? I'll take it!) Its too bad its so darned far from home. Vegetation at the summit was severely dwarfed from the weather (it was windy up there when I was there!) The ski area also ventures up to the top (unfortunately the trail makers were very fond of dynamite so they made lots of cuts into the mountain). I performed a "bushwhack" to Big Jay, but apparently someone else had bushwhacked the trail earlier.. with a chainsaw! The Herd path was very very easy to follow. For those who want to know, the trail branches off the LT just North of the summit (Follow LT north form summit down the hill to where it goes behind a fence with double blazes, follow LT for another 100 feet or so and you will see the herd path leading off to the left (pictures below). I got some nice views of Jay from Big Jay, but not much else! Click Here for the Hike Map
