Mount Mansfield 7-30-2006 4393' (The Chin, Adams Apple, The Forehead)![]()
Hiked Mansfield (and various other summits along the ridge). Mount Mansfield, home of the Ski mountain Stowe is Vermont's tallest peak, standing at a Beefy 4393'. I followed the Long Trail from Route 108 to the top. This was a pretty hard 2800 vertical. The final ascent which accounted for about 300 vertical was a rocky nightmare climb. As I reached the summit was it cold and windy (upper 40s for temperature). I didn't stick around long, although not cause of the wind and cold, but because annoying elitists were up there talking about computers (side note I hate when people do that, I hike to get away from things like that). I went slightly south of the summit and chugged a Long Trail Ale beer. I always wanted to enjoy a Long trail on the Long trail, not to mention I wanted to see how much more the alcohol affected me at 4400' (not much). I traveled the ridge line a mile or two to the parking lot near "the nose" (the mountain from S to N had peaks named after facial features, the summit is "the chin". I walked up a road to some communication towers only to find that "the nose" was closed off due to exceeding FCC RF radiation exposure! Saddened I traveled up to the most southern summit called "the forehead". I ate lunch and then made my way back to the chin. At this point the chin was very crowded (when I arrived earlier there were maybe 5 people, now there were 50). I took some pictures of the now much more clear surroundings and proceeded down the cliffs from hell. I bypassed "the Adam's apple" to Lake of the clouds. My intent was to reach Bear Head. The trail to Bear Head was abandoned and impassible. I was too worn out to bushwhack it, so I went up the "Adam's apple" connector trail to get to my final summit. I enjoyed the view of Mansfield summit for a little while then went south back to Long Trail. I went on my last descent for the weekend very slowly as I had acquired several blisters throughout the day. Overall I spent nearly 4 hours up on the ridgeline enjoying the view. The total vertical climbed on this trip was a little over 3800'. Weekend Total was 10880', a record! Click Here for the Hike Map
