Mansfield 4-21-07![]()
Ah Mansfield, You are so big! I started this hike at 5:05AM to catch the sunrise. I half succeeded in this regard (catching the sunrise half way up!). I hiked up the Gondola line the whole way. As promised by Pamola, it was pretty easy. The ahrd part was the herdpath-like non trail section between the end of the lift line and the ridge. This was steep, slippery and FUN! On the left side there is a towering cliff, the snow depth here seemed to be very very deep. On the ridge the views really opened up. It was a good 40 - 45 degrees out which felt about perfect. The wind was not strong at all. Most rocks were exposed but there was still a good amount of snow. On the summit I took my panoramic shot and ate a little bit of food before scurrying down the ridge line back to the ski lifts. The views were beautiful and plentiful! The tough part was butt sliding down the hard icy snow past the cliffs. I was getting a lot of speed sliding down that hill I used my elbow to slow my slide down. I have a picture below of the groove my elbow made. I buttslid down about 200 vertical continuously (the picture only shows the bottom 50 feet). The trip down to the base was amazingly fast. I glissaded the entire way down, only took 20 mins from the top of the lift line to the bottom. Click Here for the Hike Map
