Battell tr, LT |
23.8 miles, 7280 vertical feet, 11:55 hours. This was the big one. I started at Battell trailhead at 4:30AM in the dark and proceeded to Mount Abraham just in time to get the sunrise. I was greeted with amazing views of undercast which was flowing westbound. The undercast was hitting the 10 mile ridgeline and pooling up behind it much like water hitting a dam. I traveled north to Lincoln Peak to catch more great sunrise shots. When I reached Mount Ellen the undercast has risen considerably, and dissipated slightly. As I traveled towards General stark I passed under the clouds. From General Stark on north the trail began a decent descent which had some fun technical spots. I reached Appalachian gap after exactly 6 hours. I filled up my water bottle from water I left at the gap the night before. I began my ascent back to my car as I passed by people who I met on my way down to the gap. I encountered some funny Canadians who I hiked with and chatted with for about an hour. Funny story. When I dropped off my water bottle that night in the dark I encountered some hikers who were darting to their minivan after a long hike. They asked me if I was looking for someone as they drove off. Turns out it was the Canadians!!! We had a good chuckle over that. At around mile 20 my feet began to get angry at me. I kept up my preset pace of 2.0 MPH. Finally, foot sore and hungry I reached my car, pleased to see it was not broken into (some cars I heard (from other hikers) and later saw were broken into at Lincoln gap)!!!
